Free London museums: tickets and rainy-day plans

Plan an indoor day around free collections, with clear advice on reservations and paid exhibitions.

01

Choose one main museum

The British Museum, Natural History Museum and V&A South Kensington offer free admission to their main collections. Special exhibitions and events may cost extra. Use the museum’s own website to select the correct ticket; a paid tour is a separate product.

02

Free entry can still need planning

The British Museum recommends advance booking. The Natural History Museum offers free entry tickets to guarantee admission. Check the V&A’s current entry arrangements and exhibition tickets separately. Allow time for security and check luggage, buggy and step-free access information before leaving.

03

A manageable rainy-day route

Our suggested plan: start with the Natural History Museum, take a lunch break, then visit selected V&A galleries nearby. Pick a few highlights rather than trying to see everything. Keep the British Museum for another day if travelling with young children or anyone who needs a slower pace.

Before you book

Reserve any free timed entry first, then check paid exhibitions, transport and meals separately. A free museum day still has travel and food costs.
