Afternoon tea in London: how to choose and book

Compare the menu, total price and house rules before choosing your tea room.

01

Choose the experience

Afternoon tea commonly includes sandwiches, scones and cakes with tea. A cream tea is usually a simpler choice of scones, cream, jam and tea. Check the actual menu and portion size: the names alone do not promise the same food or service everywhere.

02

Compare the full price

Check the price per person, service charge, drinks, children’s menu and cancellation terms. Ask whether refills are included and whether sharing is allowed. Fortnum & Mason publishes separate vegetarian, children’s and made-without-gluten menus; confirm suitability and availability before booking.

03

Check dress and dietary requirements

Rules differ by venue. The Ritz has a formal afternoon-tea dress code, including a jacket and tie for gentlemen, and asks guests to state dietary requirements when reserving. Check its current rules and confirm any exceptions directly. Other tea rooms may have different requirements.

Before you book

Reserve for every guest, explain dietary needs in advance and keep the confirmation. Allow enough time between shopping, travel and your sitting.
