Rules depend on where you fish, the species and the water. There is no single fishing licence covering the whole UK. Choose the nation where you will be fishing.
England: rod licence plus permission
For salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel, the Environment Agency licence system applies in England except the River Tweed. It also covers Wales and the Border Esk region, including its Scottish stretches.
Under-13s do not need this licence. Ages 13–16 need a free junior licence; obtain it before fishing.
Select the correct species and rod allowance. A private lake, holiday booking or club membership does not automatically replace the licence.
Obtain the fishery owner's permission or day ticket separately.
The coarse-fishing close season is 15 March–15 June inclusive on rivers, streams and drains, with some other protected waters included. Check local byelaws and game-fishing seasons.
Use the official guidance for the nation and species. A permit from a fishery does not necessarily replace a rod licence.

Rutland Water
Rutland, East Midlands · England
Plan a reservoir fishing day with Anglian Water Parks, which offers trout fly fishing and separate predator fishing. Choose the experience that suits your tackle and experience, with bank and boat options explained by the operator.
Before you bookSelect the correct fishing product before booking. Trout and predator fishing cannot be mixed in the same boat. Check launch times, weather decisions and the operator's boat safety instructions before travelling.
Licences & permissionsObtain the appropriate Environment Agency rod licence unless age-exempt, plus the fishery's permit. A boat booking does not replace the national licence. Follow the chosen species, method and catch rules.
This upland reservoir offers rainbow trout fly fishing and separately managed seasonal pike sessions. Its broad shoreline and open-water setting make it an appealing fishing stop during a North Wales break.
Before you bookUse the visitor centre's current booking options to choose a bank or boat session. Check weather, methods and current seasonal access; the operator publishes different arrangements for trout and pike fishing.
Licences & permissionsYou need the relevant rod licence unless age-exempt and Llyn Brenig's fishing permit. Check the current fishery rules when buying: permission is specific to the session and fishing method selected.
Explore Loch Leven's brown trout fly fishing from a hired boat, with separate pike opportunities advertised by the fishery. The loch is also a nature reserve, so responsible boating and wildlife awareness matter.
Before you bookFishing is from boats, with no bank fishing. Choose a currently offered session and confirm the season before travel. The fishery provides lifejackets and requires them to be worn before boarding.
Licences & permissionsReserve through the fishery and follow its method and species restrictions; only one species may be targeted on an outing. There is no general Scottish rod licence for this loch, but fishery permission is required.
The Lower Lough Erne fishery offers a large-water setting near Enniskillen, with pike, perch, bream, roach and brown trout among its listed species. Plan the trip around the fish you intend to target.
Before you bookThe official guide distinguishes seasonal game fishing from coarse fishing. Check the intended access point and arrange any boat hire separately. The linked purchase service sells licences and permits, not accommodation or boats.
Licences & permissionsThe official fishery listing specifies an appropriate DAERA game or coarse rod licence and corresponding angling permit. A licence alone is insufficient; check access, permitted methods and the species' season before fishing.
A rocky Upper Wye beat upstream of Builth Wells, offering trout and grayling fishing through The Fishing Passport. Pools and runs give the stretch variety, with some opportunities to fish from the bank.
Before you bookRead the beat's access notes and check river conditions before choosing a date. Some pools are extremely deep, so assess wading carefully. The booking page explains its wash-off policy for unsuitable river conditions.
Licences & permissionsBuy the beat ticket and hold the appropriate rod licence unless age-exempt. This beat is fly fishing only and requires catch and release for all species, alongside applicable national byelaws and seasons.
A River Tay beat between Grandtully and Strathtay with a series of pools and fishing booked through FishPal. The published listing describes salmon fishing and other species, with fly and spinning opportunities subject to conditions.
Before you bookSelect an open-season date and review the beat's joining instructions. Ask about the level of guidance you need before paying: the listing distinguishes meeting the ghillie from extra charged boat and ghillie services.
Licences & permissionsBook the required rod permission for this beat and follow its conditions and Tay conservation rules. Scottish salmon fishing has seasonal restrictions and a Sunday prohibition; a general access right does not grant fishing rights.
Three managed day-ticket stretches near Bushmills offer salmon angling within reach of the north Antrim coast. Each beat has its own layout and permitted methods, making the official beat guide useful when planning a visit.
Before you bookChoose a beat and an open-season date, then check water-level and method restrictions. The published season ends on 20 October, so the 2026 season has finished as of this page's October review.
Licences & permissionsA DAERA game rod licence plus the specific River Bush day ticket is required for these beats. A general season permit does not replace the special day ticket. Follow mandatory catch-and-release requirements for salmon and sea trout.
A fishing holiday base with villa accommodation and resident-only lakes, alongside separate day-ticket waters. Carp, catfish, tench and other coarse species feature in the operator's lake descriptions, allowing guests to choose their preferred style.
Before you bookEnquire about a villa and the lakes suitable for your party. Fishing is charged separately from the villa price and payable on arrival. Some lakes may close for maintenance between October and April.
Licences & permissionsArrange the site's fishing ticket as well as the appropriate rod licence unless age-exempt. Resident-only lake access and day-ticket fishing are different products; ask which waters your selected fishing ticket covers.
Combine a Cornwall holiday park stay with a choice of fishing lakes, resident matches and scheduled festivals. White Acres offers different fishing permits, so occasional anglers and dedicated fishing parties can choose different levels of access.
Before you bookBook accommodation and add the appropriate fishing permit. Check festival dates before choosing your stay because lake restrictions can apply. The park also limits the number of anglers according to the accommodation's berth capacity.
Licences & permissionsThe park's permit is separate from the national rod licence. Choose a permit covering the lakes you want to use, and read its current rules. Landing nets are compulsory and keepnets are restricted to matches.
A self-catering resort with fishing pools and countryside accommodation near Dundee. Its fishery lists rainbow, blue and brown trout, with fly and bait fishing offered on designated pools and additional resort activities for the rest of the party.
Before you bookChoose a lodge stay, then confirm fishing arrangements and the appropriate pool. The operator advertises year-round fishing and special lodge-guest rates; check the package inclusions rather than assuming fishing is included with accommodation.
Licences & permissionsArrange a fishing session through the resort and follow the selected pool's rules. Rod hire is advertised for bait fishing. No general Scottish rod licence is required here, but the operator's permission remains necessary.
A Highland hotel offering access to an extensive network of hill lochs and fishing beats around Scourie. Brown trout fishing can be combined with a hotel stay, with separate arrangements for selected larger lochs and other waters.
Before you bookEnquire directly about rooms, your intended fishing and your experience level. Ask for walking and access advice when choosing hill lochs. Certain boats, waters and ghillie services must be requested when booking and cost extra.
Licences & permissionsThe hotel currently includes permits for its hill lochs with stays of at least three nights. Shorter stays and selected additional waters have separate charges or arrangements. Confirm exactly which permission your booking includes.
Stay in self-catering accommodation at Belle Isle Estate and explore Lough Erne's pike and coarse fishing. The estate offers jetty access and boat arrangements, making it a practical base for a fishing-focused Fermanagh break.
Before you bookAsk about an angling package, accommodation and boat hire together. The estate advertises packages with a boat included, while ordinary boat hire is arranged in advance. Confirm the exact inclusions and suitability for your party.
Licences & permissionsObtain the relevant DAERA licence and permission or permit for the waters you will fish. Ask the estate which arrangements it can make. A cottage or boat reservation alone does not establish that all fishing permissions are included.
